Dear Broadmoor Resident,

Officer Darren Hunt in 2007 at our Rummage Sale As many of you know by now, our Broadmoor Private Security Detail coordinator, EBR Police Sgt. Darren Hunt, was critically injured earlier this week in a motorcycle accident.

He is at OLOL in ICU and is now on doctor induced life support and remains unconscious as of this morning. See below for more details from Sgt. Reed. As we get more information each day, it will be posted to our web site at www.broadmoor-br.org/darren.html Please check this page daily for updates.

We have received approval from the police department to open a bank account for donations on his behalf. We encourage everyone to send donations to:

Darren Hunt Benefit Fund - Account #100389600
c/o Gulf Coast Bank & Trust Co.
7235 Jefferson Hwy.
Baton Rouge, LA 70806
Darren has received over 20 units of blood so far. Anyone wanting to donate "replacement blood" can do so at OLOL Blood Center. By donating blood, you will help replenish their blood supply and part of the cost of his transfusions will be credited on his final bill at the hospital. See www.ololrmc.com/body.cfm for details.

Sgt. Reed has asked that we keep this in "the Broadmoor Family" and not broadcast it to the media. Darren is a very private person and he and his wife Rachael know that we are praying for them.

Sincerely,

Gary Littlefield

Recent Reports from Sgt. Reed

1/13/10

To the Broadmoor Homeowners Association:

8 AM - Darren's doctors advised yesterday that Darren would be released from the hospital in New Orleans on January 21st. He will be sent home to continue his therapy locally for another 6 months or so. He is doing 90% of most things on his own. His speech is returning by leaps and bounds and his attitude toward his healing is positive plus. This has been a remarkable journey for Darren and his family and his journey was made easier by each of you that shared your blessings both in prayer and monetarily. On behalf of the Hunt family I can assure you that all that you have done is appreciated beyond any words I can say to express the family's gratitude. Short of any unforeseen event in Darren's recovery this will be my last post to your web site. If you have further questions please feel free to contact me.

Thank you all.

9 AM - Darren is now at Touro hospital in New Orleans undergoing intense therapy. I was with him when the doctors evaluated him and told him he would be there for as little as three weeks or as long as six weeks. Likely it will be around 4 weeks. Darren is having some speech problems but each day that seems to improve and his physical abilities are really improving. His right arm is still problematic but hopefully with the therapy he will regain full use of it. He is in good spirits and determined to make his stay in New Orleans as short as possible.

2 PM - Darren is doing well today. He actually spoke his first words and he did very well. He will be eating his first meal today since the accident and he will be eating a regular meal today no special diet. He is likely to be transferred to New Orleans by weeks end for intensive therapy. He also walked today with the parallel support bars and did so well they are already giving him a walker. He is progressing very well and may not be in New Orleans any longer than 6 weeks. Prayer is a powerful thing folks and they are all appreciated.

Thank you all

10 AM - Darren continues to slowly improve. Yesterday he sat up in a chair for over an hour. He is still not able to speak but he does move his mouth and understands what is told to him. Each day I see him there is a marked improvement. His attitude is good and he is trying hard to get through all this. The manner in which he is progressing is very encouraging.

WEBMASTER'S NOTE: Darren can receive mail, etc., C/O Sgt. Darren Hunt, Promise Hospital, 5130 Mancuso Lane - Room 137, Baton Rouge, LA 70809.

12/14/09

8 AM - Darren Hunt has been moved from Critical Care to long term care and is now located at Promise Hospital on Mancuso Drive here in Baton Rouge. He continues to improve gradually. He is still not able to speak or eat but is moving his arms and legs.

12/8/09

5 PM - Darren was awake and able to move his toes and fingers on command at the 10:00 visit this morning. He seems to understand what we say to him. He seemed somewhat frustrated this morning that he could not speak.

Rachel (Darren’s wife) went through the whole story about being in an accident...and that he will have to have therapy to speak again... He shrugged his shoulders and wrinkled his nose to that. So it appears that he is beginning to understand things again.

12/7/09

2 PM - Darren is awake and does seem to respond to certain things. He has not spoken yet and may not for some time. He did get a chance to see his two boys this weekend and when he did tears came from his eyes so it appears that he does recognize some things and he does respond to Rachel’s voice. He just cant tell us anything yet. His numbers have all been good for the past few days (blood pressure, heart rate, etc). The plans are to move him soon from Critical Care to Long term care for his therapy. When this happens I will let you know.

12/2/09

10 PM - Darren’s surgery went well today. Surgeon put in a number of pins and a plate in his shoulder and that is hopefully the end of anymore surgery. Plans are now to move him from Critical Care next week to a long term care facility to begin his therapy. He is still not awake but they expect that to happen fairly soon. The power of prayer is an amazing thing.

7 PM - Darren is scheduled to have surgery on his shoulder tomorrow morning at 10:30. They plan on him being awake enough to move to a long term care facility early part of next week to begin his therapy. Things are looking up. He is still not awake but it is because of the medication that he is on for pain.

11 AM - I meant to say Darren is supposed to have a Tracheotomy to assist him with breathing but it is not scheduled just yet.

Sgt. Stephen Reed

7 AM - Darren is still about the same. He has developed pneumonia and is running a fever as a result of that. He has not awakened yet and is still in need of a shoulder surgery. He has had some good days and some not so good days but we are hoping this week the antibiotics will knock out the pneumonia and they will get the shoulder done. He is still in a lot of pain so they keep him pretty sedated on pain meds which inhibits his waking up. I apologize for not being more forthcoming with info on Darren but there has really been nothing to report just more of the same. Thank you for your concern and I will try and keep you updated as Darren’s situation changes.

11/23/09

7 AM - Darren is still in the Critical Care unit of O.L.O.L. and has not yet awaken. He is off the life support and breathing again on his own. He has not had any more swelling on his brain and his blood pressure and other numbers have been good all weekend.

Here is a list of injuries Darren sustained as a result of the crash: two broken wrists, a broken shoulder, a broken nasal passage, a broken eye socket, a broken sternum, 5 broken ribs, a damaged spleen, elbow broken in 3 places, large gash over his eye, and damage to his brain in the area that affects speech (extent of damage in this area will be unknown until Darren wakes up).

Darren’s family and the police dept. appreciate all your prayers and support for him during this very critical time.

Thank you,

Sgt. Stephen Reed

3 PM - "Darren is doing better and the doctors are removing him from the life support machine."

2 PM - "Darren is having a better time today but is still unconscious. He remains on the doctor generated life support."

8 AM - "Just got off the phone with Rachael, and Darren had a bad night. His brain was working too hard telling his lungs to breathe and so they chemically paralyzed him so that his brain did not have to over work itself and would allow it time to heal. He is on life support now but it is doctor generated life support and only done so that his brain does not have to work so hard and give it time to heal.

Darren's current situation is that he has had a number of surgeries to repair broken bones - both of his wrists, and his elbow in three places. They have the bleeding stopped in his spleen. He did have some brain swelling yesterday and they had to do a procedure on his head to release the pressure on his brain. He was supposed to have had his shoulder operated on because it too is broken but because of the brain pressure that was being postponed when I last spoke with Rachael."

"Darren was on his personal motorcycle and was en route to Camp Moore up around Amite where he does volunteer work at the old Confederate fort's museum. It was in fact a gravel truck that pulled out in front of Darren." 7 AM - "I forgot to mention blood Darren has used 21 units of blood and donated blood is now needed. Thanks Gary, for what you guys are doing."
