Broadmoor Adopt-an-Oak Program
The Broadmoor Residents' Association Beautification Team is partnering with the East Baton Rouge Tree & Landscape Commission, the Department of Public Works and Entergy Corporation to launch the Broadmoor Adopt-an-Oak Program. There are several activities that make up this program, including mulching existing trees and planting new trees. Residents are also invited to attend a series of four educational seminars where they can learn some of the basics about trees, such as which ones are good choices here in hurricane country, how to plant them correctly, how to hire competent tree care providers and why those darned utility companies have to cut trees back from power lines.
The program strives to create a direct link between neighborhood trees and the human or cultural community therein. Broadmoor residents are invited to 'adopt' any number of live oaks that grow along Goodwood Boulevard between Airline Highway and Sharp Road. Adopters name their tree(s) and maintain their tree(s) with mulch as well as irrigating these trees during dry weather.
The ultimate purpose of the "Adopt-an-Oak" program is to encourage the protection of important neighborhood trees. Through the process of educating the neighborhood residents, it teaches the methodologies of tree preservation in order to create and insure a future tree legacy for the neighborhood region and also builds upon past efforts of neighborhood tree preservation. The EBR Tree & Landscape Commission will host four educational seminars on tree care topics at Broadmoor Methodist Church on Mollylea.
To adopt an oak on the Boulevard, simply pick the tree that you want to name and take care of and contact Beautification Team Chairman, Jeff Beary at the number below to let him know which oak you want and what you want to name it. If the oak is available for adoption (still an orphan) the tree is yours to tend to and to name. You will be expected to keep a close eye on the tree to make sure it is alright and give it a little water every now an then when the weather is dry. You will receive a certificate of adoption and your name will be registered as adoptive parent on our website.
